29.11.2010 Ryan McGinley

After reading Ryan McGinley's review of Sandy Kim I became much more interested in his own work. Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised. Firstly his series named 'Life Adjustment Center' is definitely my favourite, the black and white portraits are stunning and for once the subject matter struck my attention. I was also very much interested in the fact that he found his style through personal documentary work and then applied it to more commercial images.

Teamgallery.com: interview with Ryan McGinley on his series with Kate Moss.

"It was a fun assignment. You learn something new from each photo-shoot and especially from shooting photographs very fast, jumping from location to location. It's not the way I normally work."

28/11/2010 Sandy Kim

I've decided that as part of my weekly blog post I will write about photographers which I either feel have influenced my work or have inspired idea's for future work. This week I have been looking at Sandy Kims work, which I first became aware of when it was featured in Dazed and Confused along with a great interview by the photographer Ryan McGinley. Sandy Kim is considered a talented young American photographer whose documentary photographs can be extremely beautiful.

"She really knows how to use natural light, like early morning light, or sunset light in an apartment. She pays attention to it and that's always the sign of a good photographer, knowing when and how to use that light. She's small, a fly on the wall, with balls to pick up her arm and take the photo without asking permission. Sandy brings her camera everywhere and she's always ready and waiting for the moment". 24/11/2010 The Beggining

For the past three months my life has been increasingly overridden by photography and rightly so! As a commercial photography student at the AUCB I find myself 'living photographically' and enjoying it immensely and any spare time where in the past I’d find myself twiddling my thumbs I now fill with anything which may influence my practice as a photographer. This blog is my way of keeping a dedicated diary of the ups and downs while studying and to share my thoughts and opinions on everything and anything photography. So please feel free to comment and view my website (located in my links).
